Due to the popularity of the Krewe of Endymion parade, and possibly as an excuse to party all night, many people camp out on the parade route the night before to secure prime spots to view the procession.
The Krewe of Endymion was founded in 1967 and is the largest of the three "Super Krewes" of Mardi Gras, with over 2,000 all male riders. "Super Krewes" are designated as such because of their large floats, large memberships, and their celebrity grand marshals. Holding the honor in 2010 was Saints owner Tom Benson. Because they are also more recently founded, the super krewes are generally more open than the traditional exclusive krewes. Endymion is unique among the super krewes because of its parade route, which begins in Mid City and winds its way downtown where it rolls into the Superdome, the site of its "Extravaganza", its version of a Mardi Gras ball.
