More than 5,000 bicyclists ride from Union Square for a "Critical Mass" through New York City during the Republican National Convention on August 27, 2004.  "Critical Mass" is a monthly mass bike ride through the streets loosely organized by Time's Up to create awareness of bicycle riding and sustainable non-polluting transportation in general.  While "Critical Mass" occurs regularly, its coinciding with the RNC made the August 27th edition distinctly political and roughly five times as dense.  The NYPD responded in a heavy handed fashion, arresting almost 300 "protesters".
