The intent of the project, begun in 1997 by Michel Guyot, is to build a completely functioning 13th century medieval castle using only tools and techniques of that era.  Additionally all raw materials are taken from the surrounding countryside, which includes a quarry.  Over 40 people are employed by the project, as well as more than 100 volunteers.  The site has become the biggest tourist attraction in the French department of Yonne, with more than 200,000 people visiting annually.
