Freegans, short for "free" and "vegan", practice eating discarded food as an idelogical statement against overconsumption and waste in the United States. Believing the problems of society to be systemic and therefore unavoidable, freegans willfully opt out of the consumer culture of the United States as much possible, by foraging for food instead of buying it, by squatting in houses instead of paying for shelter, by not using automobiles as much as possible, and in general by working as little as possible, as all work is seen as supporting (somewhere along the line) a company whose values they do not agree with.

Critics of freegans point out that while the premise of their protests may be just their solutions are very reductive and simplistic, offering no paths to those that want to change the system they abhor with actions more than leeching off that very same system.
