Mardi Gras has been celebrated in New Orleans since the city was founded by the French near the turn of the 18th century. It was not until 1857 though that the first "krewe" (the Mystick Krewe of Comus,) paraded, bringing a bit of safety and order to what had been very informal and occasionally violent festivities.
